The Gardens at The Salutation |

I spy a garden full of grace, the blooms and blossom interlace the trees shine green, the grass is neat, what pleasure rests beneath my beak. And so I rest a little while, and let my soul repair in style.

| It is a
well known fact that Miss Gertrude Jekyll and Sir Edwyn Lutyens
worked together on a significant number of projects. Lutyens
would design and build the house, Jekyll would provide the design
and planting for the gardens. The Salutation, however is
believed to differ slightly from this arrangement, in so much that
the gardens were designed by Lutyens and the planting plans were set
by Jekyll, although there is no proof of Jekyll's involvement in the
planting. The layouts of
the different gardens have a tendency toward the Architectural, for
example the Bowling Lawn is a direct reflection of the main dining
room layout, arched at one end with two opposing door ways.
The planting patterns appear to reflect Miss Jekyll's influence.
According to our head gardener, Steve Edney, "the types and positions
of the various plants are very much in keeping with how Miss Jekyll
has worked in other gardens". The works currently underway in the 3.5 acres of ornamental gardens we have here are centred around restoring the gardens to their original glory. There have been some changes since 1912, though fortunately about 90% remains faithful to the original plan. The Gardens are freely available to be enjoyed by our guests, and are open to the public from mid April to the end of October. Please see below for the 2007 scheduled dates. If you would like to discuss a Private Group Visit please contact us. Please Note: Car Parking is available for residents only. |
